Drug blowing is defined as the act of blowing gases, powders, or vapors, etc., into a body cavity and has many medical applications, most commonly surgery, diagnostics, respiratory assistance, intensive care and anesthesia, as well as the administration of drugs through nasal blowing.
  Surgery-Diagnosis

Endoscopic insufflators are used in laparoscopic procedures to create a workspace for the surgeon. Laparoscopic insufflators use a pressurized gas to inflate the patient's body -usually carbon dioxide (CO2 ), rather than ambient air or oxygen (O2), because CO2 has less of a negative impact on the body. Specifically, CO2 is non-flammable, colorless, and has a higher blood solubility than air, and patient safety is monitored throughout the procedure. Injecting the gas into certain parts of the body can also improve diagnostic results. Blowing the drug can enhance radiologic imaging or provide access to parts of the body that are otherwise difficult to examine. For example, blowing medications can be used during routine colonoscopy, usually for deeply sedated patients.
  Breathing aids

Respiratory-assisted drug blowing ranges from respiratory masks (to provide oxygen) to PAP therapy devices (for the treatment of sleep apnea) and more. In addition to oxygenating the patient, drug blowing is also used to ventilate the patient and administer/maintain general anesthesia. Some medications used to induce general anesthesia stop the respiratory muscles -in these cases, a medication blower is used to mechanically force oxygenated air into the patient's respiratory system.
  Drug Administration and Supervision

Medications administered through nasal blowing can produce local or systemic effects and are usually more readily absorbed by the body than those given orally. These medications may include steroids, hormone replacement, decongestants, nicotine replacement, migraine medications, and vaccines. Additionally, nasal blowers can be used in patients who are unable to have intravenous access to medications that can be administered via nasal blowing to produce a localized or systemic effect that is often more readily absorbed by the body than oral administration, which may include steroids, hormone replacement, decongestants, nicotine replacement, migraine medications, and vaccines. Additionally, nasal blowers can be used in patients who are unable to administer medications intravenously.
  Medication Blow Test
Drug blowing devices incorporate many sensors into their design, such as pressure sensors, gas flow sensors, temperature sensors, etc. These sensors are used to control the pressure, gas flow, temperature output required for the inflation function, and to display real-time readings to notify the user during the operation of the device. These pneumatic components must work accurately in order for the medication blowers to work correctly and for the patient to not be harmed by the blowing process.
To ensure that the inflator is working properly, the user needs to regularly service and test the device to confirm that it is operating within the manufacturer's specifications. Manufacturers test medication blowers during product development and production. At this time, design engineers, manufacturing engineers and technicians calibrate or verify the sensors.
Once purchased and put into service by the hospital, the drug blowers are typically serviced by the manufacturer directly or by authorized service technicians (trained and certified by the manufacturer). Most device manufacturers will specify maintenance intervals to maintain the warranty of the drug blowers-usually annually or every two years.
To test the pneumatic components of a medication blower, testing usually involves measuring the pressure, flow rate or volume of the device. Typical pressures for inflators range from 10-15 mm Hg, flow rates are less than 50 L/min, service and maintenance test results are recorded, and reports or certificates are usually generated.

The TSI 5000 Series Mass Flow Meter is ideal for developing, manufacturing and servicing pill blower installations. The all-in-one flowmeter integrates flow, pressure and temperature measurements into a single test instrument that records readings and outputs time-synchronized data. the ultra-low pressure drop of TSI flow technology ensures that flow rate and volume measurements do not interfere with the drug blowers being tested and the flowmeter meets the low-pressure-drop test requirements specified by some manufacturers.
