The following is a brief summary of OSHA-accepted methods that can be used to test the fit of N95 filtering facepiece respirators.

QLFT Fit Test Methods

The Qualitative Fit Test (QLFT) is a subjective pass/fail test that requires the respirator wearer to be exposed to a chemical irritant only if the respirator is not exposed to the chemical irritant.

The presence of a chemical irritant can only be felt by the subject if the respirator produces unacceptable leakage. If the subject reports sensing the presence of a chemical irritant, the subject can only feel the presence of the chemical irritant if the respirator produces an unacceptable leak.

If the subject reports feeling the presence of a chemical irritant, then the mask leakage is too high and the fit is unacceptable (failed). If the subject does not feel the chemical irritant, the fit is considered to be
